The doctoral topic of volitional vacancy and the question of whether the ownership of unoccupied apartments in prime locations is worth protecting, aptly reflects Astrid Maurer's field of research. At the intersection of land policy, valuation and real estate economics, Astrid Maurer is particularly interested in issues related to actor networks in the housing and land market, innovative design of land policy instruments, and inner city development (in particular transparency of land market and owner data, problem properties and gaps between buildings).
