The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development is a non-university research institute in the field of the spatial sciences and a member of the Leibniz- Association. Our subject is the sustainable development and transformation of cities and regions in the context of the global human-ecological crisis. The built environment is of particular importance as a major source of resource consumption and climate emissions.

Background

Background Sustainable urban development is highly required. Many policies in Europe address this need and propose respective regulations and measures, but how do they effect the way we built our cities? The German-French DFG-project Form-Follows-Policy aims at this complex causal relation between physical urban form and land policies. To give answers, an innovative approach combines data-driven spatial analysis and a neo-institutional perspective on practices of land policy and applies it to a cross-border study (Upper Rhine Valley). Applying approaches of geospatial techniques and urban analytics, patterns of urban form and their change over time are analysed. These spatial patterns are contrasted with respective practices of land policy in municipal and regional planning in France and Germany (Project Number DFG 512639122).

You will conduct a comparative, interdisciplinary analysis, making use of (quantitative) geospatial analysis and (qualitative) methods from social sciences. Urban form analysis is performed through morphological settlement analysis and classification approaches at different levels of scale (from settlement bodies to buildings) using French and German geospatial data products. Through case study analysis, you will identify relevant land policies through planning documents, planning regulation on different administrative levels from municipal to state and conduct interviews with planners and developers to indentify practices. On this empirical basis, you will develop and test hypotheses to conclude on the relationship between urban form and land policies.

As part of the IOER Research Area of Spatial Information and Modelling you will work in a motivated team of spatial data scientists, cartographers, geographers and urban planners in Dresden, but have close cooperations with the co-investigator at Technical University Dortmund and co-operation partners at Université de Strasbourg and Universté Gustave Eiffel/IGN, Paris. The empircial work will be supported by students assistants.
